W:Do you have any other pastime besides stamp collecting?
M:Yes, fishing.
W:That’s very popular, too.Every time I pass the lake, I see many people sitting there with a rod in hand, but I’ve never seen anyone catch anything.
M:Maybe it’s because you lack the patience.
W:I would break my rod if I sat about for hours getting nothing.
M:Oh, look at that man’s pole. It’s bent like a bow. There must be a huge fish on the end of the line.Let’s go over and have a look.
W:OK.Wow, what a big fish!
M:So it is interesting to fish with a rod sitting at the lake.Say, what do you often do in your spare time?
W:Oh, nothing special.I read, watch TV and go to the movies.

M:Well, my wife’s been talking about Egypt recently. She may want to go there. And I’d like to go there, too.
W:Yes, it’s an interesting country to see.
M:But we can’t make up our minds yet.You know, a round-trip ticket to Egypt costs a lot.
W:But you could go by sea.
M:You’re right.It’s cheaper, isn’t it?
W:You may save at least half of the money if you go by ship.
M:But don’t you think it would take a long time?
W:But you can enjoy the scene of the sea and the rising sun.
M:Yes, I’ll tell my wife.
W:You’ll definitely enjoy yourselves, I’m sure.
M:Don’t be so sure.We may not go anywhere.
W:You always hesitate at everything.
M:It’s not my fault, you know.My wife always worries too much.
W:About what?
M:Well … Who is going to look after the house? Who is going to look after the garden? And who is going to look after the pets? We have these problems every year. And in the end we have to stay at home and look after everything.

Text 10
I used to dislike television.I thought that people spent too much time watching it.A lot of my friends, however, always talked about the sports programs and films on it.They never read any books or went out in the evenings. So I refused to buy a TV set.
Last year I turned 60 and I retired from my job.My son bought me a TV set.“It will make you learn some of the latest news,” he said. It’s quite true.I’ve watched all the news programs.I know far more about the world now.And I read more books, too.In fact, I think I may follow one of the Open University TV courses next year.Perhaps I’ll get a degree when I’m 65.
There’s only one problem.I get quite angry when people interrupt my favourite programs. My friends don’t understand that I can change at 60.
