M:A rubbish plant? To produce rubbish or to deal with rubbish?

W:To deal with rubbish,of course.

W:Hi,Frank.Have you finished grading the term paper?

M:Yeah,I only slept 4 hours last night and it was broken sleep. It nearly killed me.

W:Hum.It’s always hard work.I stayed up very late myself too.

M:Well,I got a bit fed up with all the teaching plan writing, homework checking and the grading.Thank God,it’s the end of the term.I’m certainly going out for some fun tonight.Do you have any plans?

W:Mary and I are going to the pub.Do you feel like joining us?

M:Er,no,thanks.I don’t think I’d be able to deal with all those headaches afterwards.I’d prefer a film with a good story.

W:Sounds like a great idea. Here’s the entertainment section.Look through and pick on what you’re interested in.Maybe we can join you in the cinema and go for the drinks after that.

M:Flyboys is playing at 9:30 pm.It’s a film about the American soldiers in World War Ⅰ.

W:No,that’s too late.Is there anything on around 7:30?So that Mary and I can still drop in at that nice little pub near the cinema.

M:Well, how about this Chinese film? The Banquet. At 7:40.It’s very popular.Interesting story and excellent director.

W:Alright.Let’s see that then.I’ll ring Mary to check whether it’s OK with her.

M:Fine. If you’re going,I’ll meet you in the car park at 5:40 when we finish work.We can still have time for some food before that.

M:Yeah. She was about 190 centimeters tall…and wearing a white and black dress,a red sweater over it,and a pair of basketball shoes.

W:Hmm.What else?

M:She had a heavy build, with long hair and was probably in her late 30’s.

W:What was,uh,taken…exactly?

M:Well,just my left shoe.

W:Oh,this man again! He often wanders around the park.He likes to remove the left shoe from men for some unknown reason and usually returns the shoe to the crime scene a couple of days later.

M:And how about the city?Have you seen much of it yet?

W:I’ve seen a bit.It just seems such a big busy city.I don’t see how I ever find my way around.

M:I know.Big cities can seem really strange and frightening at first.Where are you living?

W:Well,I found a tiny apartment, but it’s in the downtown area and it’s close to work.

M:It all sounds really interesting.Hope you’ll enjoy yourself there.

Text 10

Today I’m going to tell you something about table manners in different countries.I think you already know that people in different countries have different ways of doing things.Something that is rude in one country may be quite polite in another country. For example,in Britain you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having some liquid food. And in Japan you needn’t worry about making a noise when you drink it.It shows that you are enjoying it.But that is considered bad manners in Britain.

In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table during a meal.In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. But it is in the Arab countries that we really must be careful with our hands. You see,in Arab countries you mustn’t eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So,what should you do if you visit another country?Well, you needn’t worry. You can ask the native people there to help you or just watch carefully and try to do as they do,not as you do at home.
