W:What are your reasons?

M:Well, firstly, we students have much in common with them.

W:That’s true.

M:Secondly, they are more energetic and enthusiastic.

W:Okay.I think elderly teachers tend to be patient and careful with explanations.

M:Emm, I agree with you.But you know that young teachers are more ready to accept or create new ideas. And that’s another reason for me to love young teachers.

W:Did you bow back?

M:No, I tried to shake her hand, but it seemed she disliked it.

W:Well, Japanese typically bow to greet each other in Japan. She might have been offended by your strong handshake.

M:But she was in America! Shouldn’t she have known that strong handshake in America means confidence and respect?

W:Things are different in Japan. You know, in some countries, making eye contact with others is considered rude.

M:The meeting really didn’t go down well at all.I think I need to read up on intercultural communication before I have another meeting with someone from another country.

W:That’s a good idea.

Text 10

Research says husbands do not do their equal share of work around the house.A study from an American university says men seldom do the same share of housework.Researchers interviewed 180 working couples who became first-time parents. Both husbands and wives worked almost the same number of hours in full-time jobs. However, men did housework five hours a week less than women after their baby was born.It is a different story for mothers.Becoming a parent adds about 21 hours a week to a mother’s work. Most of this is looking after her baby.New fathers don’t do more work because they don’t realize the mothers are doing so much more.Another reason is that after a baby is born, fathers follow the “traditional roles”.That is, the mother looks after the baby and the father works outside.
