Text 10
Last winter, a heavy snowstorm hit the United States.Farms across the country suffered badly.Robert Colangelo, however, stood calmly at his farm.He was bathed in blue and red lights and surrounded by lots of fresh vegetables. This is Green Sense Farms. It is one of the largest indoor farms in the United States.Unlike traditional farms, vegetables here sit on eight-metre-high shelves under special lights.Plants grow faster while consuming less energy under special lights. As a result, indoor farms usually use much less water than traditional ones.
Colangelo is trying to improve his farm.He is working with a Chinese lab to find seeds that grow fastest under blue and red lights. They’ll be like super-seeds.
Indoor farming is a new idea, but many scientists think this might just be the future of agriculture.According to the United Nations, the global population will grow by 2.4 billion by the middle of this century.Droughts and floods, meanwhile, are likely to occur more frequently.Indoor farming is the way to feed the growing population.
